Ref attacked at the Rec

A disputed call on the basketball court led to violence Wednesday evening at the Student Recreation Center.

According to University Police reports, Krishnan Calmese rushed a referee around 9 p.m. Wednesday after a third technical foul ousted his intramural team from the playoff tournament. John Sweeney, director of the Office of Campus Recreation, said that none of the three technicals were called on Calmese, but intensity levels always are higher with playoff games.

Calmese, 24, of Chicago is not an NIU student, but a paying member at the Rec. Sweeney said Calmese has been suspended from the Rec for the remainder of his membership, which lasts through May 15. A small sign posted at the Rec informs employees to not admit Calmese.

University Police Lt. Matt Kiederlen said that Calmese allegedly struck the victim in the upper chest with his shoulder, knocking him to the floor. Calmese then left the Rec, and Amy Fawcett, director of intramurals and sports clubs, called the police. Officers were able to get the name of the alleged offender from witnesses and staff present, but no arrest was made because the victim, who was not injured in the incident, has chosen to not press charges.

“This was an unusual incident,” Sweeney said. “One technical foul is not unusual, but it is rare for two in a game. Three technicals is also rare, even rarer that anyone would touch an official.”
