Trio to rock arena tonight

For the second time this week, music will emanate from the Convocation Center when Styx, Kansas and John Waite play tunes that made them popular.

John Waite will kick off the show at 7 p.m., followed by Kansas and headliner Styx.

“They’re legends in rock ’n’ roll and entertainment,” said Joe Coots, marketing manager for the Convo Center. “This is going to be a fun show.”

Convo Center Director John Gordon said that having Styx is positive for the Convo Center.

“We’re able to show our students that we’re out there trying to find diverse acts,” Gordon said.

Gordon said that there has been positive feedback from the tour so far.

Tickets have been sold to people as far as southern Missouri and Michigan.

Gordon contacted a promoter from Police Productions and decided to have Styx.

“We’re trying to cultivate a relationship with a couple different promoters, and hopefully they’ll do more shows,” Gordon said.

Daniel Olson, professor of biological sciences, is looking forward to the concert.

“It’s my birthday, so I’m giving myself a present,” Olson said. “I never imagined Styx and Kansas would still be around.”

Olson expressed his excitement by asking if anyone in his class was going to the concert.

“I was giddy in front of the class; I said, ‘It doesn’t get any better than this.’”

In 1972, Styx released their debut album and have since recorded hits such as “Come Sail Away,” “Lady” and “Mr. Roboto.”

Styx just released their latest album, “Cyclorama,” this month.

Hits by Kansas include “Dust in the Wind” and “Carry on Wayward Son.”

Waite’s hit solo songs include “Missing You” and “When I See You Smile.”

Tickets for tonight’s concert, sponsored by Police Productions and NIU, are $41 and $36. Coots said that good seats are still available and this is a wonderful show for Valentine’s Day.
