Two car accidents within two hours Tuesday afternoon left two victims injured.

One took place when a speeding Chevorlet Cavalier ran a red light about 2:30 p.m. The car smashed into two cars at the intersection of Annie Glidden Road and Hillcrest Drive.

Witnesses at the scene said Nancy Farris, 51, of DeKalb was being pursued by a police officer at the time she ran the red light, causing Tuesday’s accident. The allegation was not confirmed by officers at press time. Farris suffered mild injuries during the accident and was taken by ambulance to Kishwaukee Hospital. Farris was placed in handcuffs as she exited her vehicle on Annie Glidden Road, just north of the intersection at Hillcrest Drive. Sgt. Lisa Miller of the DeKalb Police Department said this was done for the safety of all involved, since Farris had ran the red light.

Miller confirmed that Farris was uncuffed when she entered the ambulance and had not been arrested as of press time, but charges are pending.

When Farris entered the intersection heading north on Annie Glidden Road, she crashed into two other vehicles that were heading west on Hillcrest Drive. These vehicles were in the process of turning left onto Annie Glidden Road.

Sara Terry, 19, a sophomore art education major, was the driver of one of the cars involved.

“It happened really fast. I didn’t even see it,” said Terry, who was not aware of which car hit her.

Terry’s vehicle, a Pontiac Grand Am, suffered minor damage to the rear end.

The other vehicle, a Kia Sephia, suffered major damage to the front end of the vehicle. The front bumper was completely torn from the body and fluids leaked from the exposed undercarriage.

Kimberly Svestka, 18, a freshman accountancy major, and Dina Gandhi, 20, a sophomore marketing major, were passengers in the Kia.

“We were in the left turn lane and had the green arrow,” Svestka said. “The car went straight through the intersection and didn’t stop.”

At least four DeKalb police units and three NIU police vehicles were present at the accident scene, as well as other officers who were diverting traffic away from the busy intersection. Two ambulances arrived to tend to those involved, although Farris was the only one to seek aid. Three fire department vehicles, including a fire truck, arrived at the scene to assist in the removal of debris and clean-up of the hazardous materials. All three vehicles involved were towed from the scene.

Another accident took place about two hours earlier at 12:15 p.m. at Twombley Road, west of Lucas Road.

The roll-over accident occurred on a hill on Twombley Road where the asphalt gives way to gravel road.

“It’s real common here [with] the loose gravel,” said Capt. William Kalal of the DeKalb Fire Department. “They misjudge their speed and you can see what happened.”

The driver, Lori A. Hensley, 38, of DeKalb was the only person in the car and was taken to Kishwaukee Hospital.

According to DeKalb County Sheriff police reports, Hensley lost control of the vehicle and ended up in a north ditch.

“It did not look like any serious injuries to the driver, but the car is a complete loss,” Kalal said.
