Ben Kweller rocks the ballroom

By Casey Toner

Ben Kweller’s Thursday night show drew a wide range of students: indie kids, preppie kids and kids that just wanted to rock.

The show, which took place at the Duke Ellington Ballroom, featured three bands: Troubled Hubble, Adam Green and Ben Kweller.

Starting out, a boring Trouble Hubble took stage, but soon warmed up to the audience. As demonstrated by its wonderful tribute to Soul Train, the real fun began when Troubled Hubble stopped caring about looking cool and lost its inhibitions.

Folk singer Adam Green, the main opening act, was a combination of slow-paced Bob Dylan chords and the tasteless lyrics of Tenacious D, or better yet, Har Mar Superstar. It kind of seemed like Green was making up his lyrics as he went along, but that didn’t matter. His stone-faced stare, packaged with his sick lyrics, made an otherwise creepy man funny. Really, really, funny.

After Green left the stage, Ben Kweller came out by himself with his acoustic guitar, playing a beautiful rendition of Vanilla Ice’s “Ice Ice Baby.” Things just don’t get better than that – but they did.

Kweller spread his talent all over the stage, jamming on piano, electric guitar, maracas and an acoustic guitar. The only drawback of the show was that the ballroom was too large a venue for the small, less-than-enthusiastic crowd. The majority of people in the audience passively watched the charismatic performances as if they were waiting for class to end.

The action culminated with a stunning rendition of the “Sha-Sha” grunge hit “No Reason.” The guitarists intertwined classic-rock style guitar licks, the chug – chug rhythms of Led Zeppelin and the pretty interludes of any great jam band.

After “No Reason,” Kweller returned for an encore, then requested the help of Adam Green for a sing-a-long to the Beach Boys’ “Kokomo.” Let me rephrase that: Kweller left the stage, went to the bus looking for Green, grabbed Green and came running back to the stage apologizing to the crowd.

“Kokomo” was amazing. Kweller and Green were like two kids having fun at a talent show.

Apology accepted.
