‘Clone’

By Mike Larmon

Folk rock meets jam-band when guitar wizard Leo Kottke and Phish bassist Mike Gordon team up for their new album, “Clone.” The record is a perfect combination of the two different styles of music these musicians normally play.

“Clone” consists of 14 tracks, some instrumental, some full of whimsical lyrics sung by either the goofy Gordon or the serious Kottke. Both musicians take time to play other instruments than their own. Besides his bass, Gordon experiments with the guitar and the skull flute, while Kottke dabbles in piano and percussion.

-Lyrically, the album is a bunch of randomly generated stories. In “The Collins Missile,” Gordon sings of a mail order rocket he received in the mail. “When the Collins missile came/ I opened up the box/ I followed the instructions/ And took it to a field/ I aimed it at your house/ Because of all the things you said …” Gordon’s obvious humor is evident in songs like “With,” in which the chorus is, “I will be with you like things that always go together / I’ll be with you in any kind of weather.”

Kottke’s voice makes songs sound a little more serious, which is evident in his only song on the album with lyrics, “Middle of the Road.” It seems as though Gordon is trying to get Kottke to lighten up a little, and that’s a good thing.

Gordon’s songs here are reminiscent of some of his classic Phish songs like “Contact” and “Scent of a Mule.” Take the lyrics of “Contact”: “The tires are the things on your car that make contact with the road.” Much of Gordon’s strange sense of humor is present on this record, and it sounds like Kottke is enjoying it.

Meanwhile, songs like “Disco,” the fastest track on the album, features the dueling instrumentation of Gordon and Kottke. Gordon’s bass always seems to compliment Kottke’s guitar, and Kottke’s guitar always seems to build off Gordon’s bass. It’s songs like this that really make the album work.

As Phish fans prepare for the return of their heroes, albums like this seem to preoccupy them while they wait. It’s nice to see two incredible musicians like these share the spotlight for a moment.
