Hispanic month in full stride

Hispanic Heritage month is celebrated through Oct. 15, and various activities already have taken place to recognize Latinos and Latin Americans.

Michael Gonzales, director of Latino and Latin-American Studies at NIU, said the celebratory month began Sept. 15 in Mexico and Sept. 16 at NIU.

The activities included speeches, food and recognition of cultural ties with Mexico.

“Hispanic Heritage Month is an opportunity for students and faculty to receive an introduction to the cultural and historical fabric of America’s largest ethnic group,” Gonzales said.

Upcoming events include the “Latin Heat Comedy Jam” at 8:30 p.m. Friday at Cole Hall, Room 101, as well as a performance by Teatro Latino at 7:30 p.m., Oct. 10 at the Holmes Student Center’s Duke Ellington Ballroom.

Gonzales takes pleasure in organizing events that help Latinos celebrate their culture.

“I enjoy organizing major events that celebrate the richness of Latino culture and history.”

Gloria Price, the program coordinator for the University Resources for Latinos, agreed.

“We, as the people of America, should celebrate and embrace the contribution that all its people have made to make America what it is today and will be tomorrow.”

For Price, being a Mexican American is something she is proud to contribute to United States’ culture.

“It means solidifying our space and consolidating our efforts for a better America,” Price said. “Latinos have played an important role and will continue to play a role in sustaining and collaborating to maintain a strong America.”
