Student hit by NICOR vehicle

A local woman was hit by a Northern Illinois Gas vehicle at 11:58 a.m. Thursday, according to DeKalb police.

Sheila Calhan, 18, of 1400 W. Lincoln Highway Apt. J16, was hit riding her bicycle in the 800 block of West Lincoln Highway. Calhan is a freshman at Kishwaukee Community College.

Calhan was traveling eastbound on West Lincoln Highway at the same time the driver of a truck was traveling eastbound in his NICOR vehicle.

According to police reports, the driver proceeded to make a left hand turn into the parking lot, located at 807 W. Lincoln Highway, and hit Calhan.

Hermann received a citation for failure to exercise due care when pedestrians are present.

Brandy Walter, senior communications major and cousin of Calhan witnessed the accident from her apartment in Cardinal Apartments, located at 823 W. Lincoln Highway.

Walter said that Calhan was hit by the NICOR car and “flew” over the hood.

According to the DeKalb police department, Calhan suffered minor injuries. She was taken to Kishwaukee Hospital, treated and released.
