Huskies fall flat to EMU

The weather may have been sunny, but the sun wasn’t shining on the NIU baseball team this weekend.

NIU dropped four games to Eastern Michigan this weekend and dropped its conference record to 0-7.

On Friday, NIU dropped Game 1, 10-2, and Game 2, 4-0. The Huskies struggled with the bats as they managed only two runs in the two games combined.

Pat Kerrigan started the game off well, as he hit a two-run homer in the first inning. That was the only offense the team would have.

“We had a lot of opportunities in the first game, but [Tom Gallus] made good pitches to get us out,” said NIU coach Dave Schrage. “We can’t seem to hit any right-hander who throws hard.”

In Game 2, Brad Gavelek pitched a complete game but couldn’t get any run support as he lost 4-0.

Despite being back home for two more against EMU, Sunday wasn’t any kinder to the Huskies, as they lost Game 1, 8-2, and Game 2, 18-3.

The Huskies once again took the lead early in the first game but couldn’t maintain it as EMU scored in each of the last five innings.

Noel Danielson homered in Game 1 to give NIU a 2-1 lead, but that was the lone bright spot. Danielson, for the double-header, went 4-of-8 with a homerun and 2 RBI. Starter Don Rodman pitched four and one-third innings, allowing six runs but only four earned.

“Noel has been solid for us all season long,” Schrage said. “He has been hitting the ball as well as anyone on our team, and he has been our most complete player.”

Game 2 was one the Huskies would rather forget, as EMU scored 18 runs off 18 hits. One bright spot for NIU was the relief appearance by Zach Minor, who pitched two and two-thirds innings, allowing one hit, walking three and striking out three.

“I thought Zach threw well in his relief appearance,” Schrage said. “That was encouraging because he’s one of the guys you’re probably gonna see more of this year.”

These four games meant a lot to the Huskies as they were trying to get a few wins inside the conference. However, they came out empty handed and will have to wait until next weekend against Western Michigan to try and get their first conference win.

“I’m definitely disappointed we lost these games,” Danielson said. “Now our backs are really against the wall for conference.”
