NIU golf team ‘glad’ to be back home

“It’s one of those times when you are just glad it’s over,” said NIU women’s golf coach Pam Tyska upon her arrival back in DeKalb.

The Huskies finished a respectable seventh at the University of Iowa’s Lady Northern Invitational last weekend. The tournament was scheduled for 54 holes but was reduced when rain washed out the final 18 holes on Sunday.

“We were lucky on Sunday,” Tyska said. “We went out with those who were seventh through 14th and got our round in before the rain came. As we were eating lunch it started to pour, and I had a good feeling that those who were on the course at the time were not going to get their round in.”

Her feeling was right. Tournament officials took the final scores from Saturday, which left the Huskies right where they started the day. But Tyska does not feel the day was a wash out for the team.

“We played our best golf of the weekend on Sunday, and I liked our scores even though they did not count,” said Tyska.

The Huskies did outstanding considering that they did not have the services of senior Kim Hodge.

“Kim sprained her ankle on the way to the clubhouse Thursday before we even started our practice round,” Tyska said. “We spent the bulk of the day in and out of the hospital and X-rays. We won’t know the extent of the injury until she sees the doctor today.”

Hopefully Hodge will be able to return to the lineup because the team is going to need her as the ladies turn their attention to Iowa State and prepare for their tournament in Ames, Iowa this weekend.
