Tyska’s Huskies heading to Illinois St. in search of hardware

The NIU women’s golf team tees off the 1992 season this weekend with a tournament at Illinois State University.

The Huskies are the defending champions and return to defend their title against 13 other schools.

“ISU being at home will be tough,” said coach Pam Tyska, “but Iowa State, Michigan State and Purdue could also be considered favorites. What I like best about our chances is we have five veteran golfers back from last year.”

Those five that coach Tyska is bringing with her to ISU are No. 1 seed, junior Karen Bromberg; No. 2, sophomore Shelly Wendells; No. 3, senior Kim Hodge; No. 4, sophomore Samantha Thompson and No. 5, senior Jen Hall.

The girls earned their seeds in the top five by playing qualifying rounds over the last two weeks.

“We seed them strictly from their scores in 72 holes of team qualifying,” Tyska said. “There really weren’t any surprises in who made it.”

With inner team qualifying set, the Huskies look to gain another Top-5 finish at the University Course in Bloomington. A check of the recent past shows that NIU won the event last year and in 1990. THe Huskies also posted a second-place finish in 1991, which brings a smile to Tyska’s face.

“ISU is my alma mater, and it is always nice to bring home some hardware from there.”says Tyska.
