Fearless foursome set to take field

By Rob Bolton

Wagner, Wynn, Nickelberry and Johnson may sound like a law firm, but, in reality, they will lay down the rules for the NIU football team this season.

They will combine the perfect mix of power, speed, agility, and strength:

‘Senior Larry Wynn, tri-captain and Mr. “Almost” All-America (The Football News-1991), epitomizes the attitude of the continuous need for improvement at any level of team sports.

Last season, he was second (to Heisman Trophy winner Desmond Howard) in the nation with 784 all-purpose yards. He averaged 19.8 yards per reception and 21.9 yards per kickoff return— one of which was 50 yards.

Wynn possesses prominent game-breaking abilities and immense talent. He is a flanker and will return punts and kickoffs for the Huskies.

‘Lining up in the backfield, where once he lays his hands on the ball he won’t remain for long, is junior tailback LeShon Johnson.

He has been clocked at 4.51 seconds in the 40-yard dash and allows head coach Charlie Sadler another bonafide threat on offense. Nicknamed “Cowboy,” Johnson arrives in DeKalb after attending Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College.

In the two seasons he spent with the Golden Norsemen, he rushed 232 times for 1,301 yards and 16 TDs. In the scrimmage last Saturday, he was hidden from possible Illini scouts and did not rush the ball—picking up a possible new nickname, “Secret Weapon.” He will unequivocally add fire to this Huskie offense.

‘On the other side of the pigskin, where the blaze of terror already reigns, is senior nose tackle Rob Wagner. The 6-4, 270-pound tri-captain and offensive menace will earn his fourth letter and continue to solidify the defensive line. Coach Sadler has eminent respect for him.

“We need his leadership,” Sadler admitted. “We just need him.”

Wagner also holds the crown on the team with a 397-pound bench press.

‘Simply put, he’s “Nick.” But there is nothing simple about sophomore standout Gerald Nickelberry. As an inside linebacker last season, he notched 89 tackles, most by an NIU freshman in 15 years.

Currently, he is a member of the pre-season All-Independent Second Team published by Pro Football Weekly’s College Preview 1992.

These are just four of the gridiron warriors who will represent NIU on the battleground this season. With this level of talent on exhibition, the Huskies will challenge each and every foe

with more than just effort.
