DeKALB — NIU’s Student Government Association voted this Friday to appoint a new senator and director of public affairs in their weekly meeting.

Edwin Perez-Hernandez, a senior studying fine arts in the College of Visual and Performing Arts, was appointed the position of senator after giving a brief presentation to the senate.

“I would like to be the voice that embodies what students want at the College of Visual and Performing Arts,” Perez-Hernandez said.

The student senate currently only has 22 seats filled out of a possible 30, according to their bylaws.

The SGA also appointed a new director of public affairs to handle social media and marketing for the association.

Anthony Jones, a junior studying business management, was appointed to the position following his presentation illustrating his desire to fill the role.

“I plan to better the social media impact of SGA so that it reaches even more students and raises involvement,” said Jones. “I’m well-versed in digital media and marketing, and I understand this work very well.”

According to the SGA bylaws, responsibilities of the public affairs director include conducting social media promotion, corresponding with media outlets on behalf of the SGA and disseminating press releases on behalf of the Executive Cabinet of the SGA.

SGA meetings are open to the public and held weekly at NIU; their schedules and agendas can be viewed online via Huskie Hub at the bottom of the page.
