From Sweden, with love

By Derek Wright | February 20, 2007

While fellow multi-instrumentalist Sufjan Stevens approaches chamber pop with a bigger-is-better attitude, Swedish songsmith Emil Svanagen brilliantly sprinkles his falsetto-driven tunes with an "only when necessary" use of vast theatrics. This less-is-more...

Seagal’s second album not a ‘break-neck’ success

By Mat Warrenfeltz | February 20, 2007

It's really hard to think of anything but a ponytail, cheesy acting and the man's universal ex-military character from every movie when hearing the name Steven Seagal. But believe it or not, the actor known mainly for his kung-fu fighting style has stepped...

Save the best for next time

By Derek Wright | February 20, 2007

It's not that any of the tracks on The Softlightes' debut LP are bad, per say. The 11 songs, for the most part, are delicately structured and full of indie pop's best traits - uplifting melodies, quirky themes, unassuming musicianship - without any of...

Convo to host wide range of musical acts

By Jenna Andriano | February 19, 2007

DeKALB | Between sports, ceremonies, comedy and music, the Convocation Center is at its busiest during the winter months, when outdoor venues are closed. "For February alone, we have something like 22 events scheduled within a 28-day month," said Kevin...

America’s best Beatles to play DeKalb

By Herminia Irizarry | February 16, 2007

DeKALB | On Saturday, John, Paul, George and Ringo will stop by Otto's Niteclub. OK, so the real John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr obviously cannot play in DeKalb on Saturday (or anywhere else for that matter), but the Beatles...

Think before you ink

By Jenna Andriano | February 15, 2007

Apparently, the longer something is in existence, the more disturbingly it is abused, misused and made really, really uncool. Take math for example - great when you need to count something, or even add or subtract, but it's been around so long it's ceased...

Mayer comes back to heartland for NIU show

By Tom Bukowski | February 14, 2007

Recent Grammy winner and Rolling Stone "New Guitar God" John Mayer will appear at NIU Feb. 20 at when he plays at the Convocation Center with special guest Mat Kearney at 7:30 p.m. as part of his tour for his latest album, "Continuum." This is hardly...

The Fold on ‘Home Improvement’

By Derek Walker | February 14, 2007

"Home Improvement" follows a family of Michigan natives led by Tim "The Tool Man" Taylor. He, his wife Jill and their three boys seemed to learn a lifetime's worth of life lessons during the show's initial eight-season run. Tim is a car enthusiast, which...

Top romance movies

By David Rauch | February 14, 2007

1. "The Blues Brothers"

Valentine's Day is about spending time together doing what you both like. Very few movies bridge that divide like 1980's "The Blues Brothers." The music cannot be rivaled, the movie could not be more nostalgic, John Belushi and Dan Akroyd could not be funnier and there could not be a happier ending.

2. "Kindergarten Cop"

It's easy to say the late teens and twenty-somethings at NIU have nothing but fond memories of Arnold Schwarzenegger. Put on "Kindergarten Cop" this Valentine's Day. Watch it in the afternoon, lying around the house, upside down, hanging off couches, with Kool-Aid and popcorn.

3. "The Wedding Singer"

While any of the Adam Sandler movies would do, "The Wedding Singer" seems to be the safest bet. We have all seen the movie, and it is worth re-watching; not as though after five minutes of Adam Sandler's long, curly locks you will be paying attention to the movie anyway.

Top love songs

By Mat Warrenfeltz | February 14, 2007

Compiling a list of the best love songs is nearly impossible. No, actually, it is impossible. Romance is the one subject it is acceptable for an artist to write about in every song on every record. So instead, here's the top five songs by the band Love.

1. Love, "My Little Red Book"

Fuzzy, lo-fi guitars stomp in time with heavy-handed percussion in a tale of longing for the one who got away.

2. Love, "Seven & Seven Is"

Rifle-fast rhythms anchor this angsty, psychedelic garage anthem.

3. Love, "My Flash On You"

An almost danceable, suave take on the band's 1960's rock'n'roll.

4. Love, "The Daily Planet"

Distorted acoustics send this moody ballad's needles into the red.

5. Love, "Alone Again Or"

The band at arguably its softest, while strings and multiple harmonies drone out confessions of true love.

Valentine dos and don’ts

By Herminia Irizarry and Jenna Andriano | February 14, 2007

1. DO: Tell that person you are vying for just how much you really care - or if you already have, remind them. DON'T: Be cheap. You're not good at art and money CAN buy you love. 2. DO: Blindfold your special someone - not against their will - and take...

Movies to broach awkward subjects

By Stacie Wieland | February 14, 2007

Subject 1: Fidelity One of the biggest worries that can plague a couple is that of someone on the side. Want to reinforce just how important fidelity is? No worries. Let one of the biggest cinematic deterrents of infidelity do the talking for you by popping...
