The Crue rocks Rockford

By DAVID MATZ | February 17, 2009

An amazing set of bands decided to put the "rock" back in Rockford Sunday night. Mötley Crüe, on their new "Saints of Los Angeles," tour stopped for a night of hard-hitting and electrifying rock and roll. But the '80s hair metal band was not alone:...

Re-imagining of horror film is filled with same old generic horror filler

By JOHN RANALLO | February 17, 2009

When I see a horror movie, there are certain expectations I expect to be met. What may be sacrificed in poor storytelling must be made up in visuals and drama, regardless of whether it's presented well. The new horror offered in "Friday The 13th" is a...

Track of the Day

By LINDSEY KASTNING | February 17, 2009

Track of the Day: "An American Banned" - Dillinger Four

The only surefire cure for "the Mondays" that I know of is Dillinger Four's "An American Banned" off the album "Midwestern Songs of the Americas."

This Minnesota punk rock group offers the quintessential ballad about working for too little, not having enough and wondering what Congress is doing about it.

The track starts off with lonely guitar chords that offer no threat to the listener's eardrums. Then, the whole band comes to form with a drum beat that won't let anyone escape.

When you're stuck in traffic, headed to a job that just isn't the type of place you want to be at, lyrics about your paycheck and banks are the most timely - "A third goes to the government, and half goes down the rent."

You wonder along with the song, "Didn't life guarantee me anything besides overtime for low-interest loans?"

Dillinger Four offers an angrier and more mature look at the same problems "Summertime Blues" talks about. After all, love isn't the only repeating theme in music.

Everyone has that common question of where those green pieces of paper really go. And, as the song goes, maybe people's "cheated feeling is universal when I'm clocked in."

Perhaps not everyone has questioned personal value and economics, but for anyone who grew up in a blue-collar community, "An American Banned" should be a personal anthem.

Product-placement in ’30 Rock’ funny but shameful

By BEN BURR | February 16, 2009

Recently, '30 Rock' has come under fire for prominently featuring a McFlurry in last week's episode. Unable to take a side, I present both sides to the product placement debate. Point: "30 Rock" makes product-placement funny Tina Fey's award-winning,...

Beware of Sporcle

By NYSSA BULKES | February 13, 2009

There's a new virus on campus, and it's worse than Facebook and MySpace combined. It's adding to your professors' plight of trying to get you to focus during your lecture in Reavis 203. This virus doesn't eat your computer, though. It's worse. It's highly...

Lily Allen ‘packs a bite’ in new album

By ANDY FOX | February 13, 2009

Lily Allen - "It's Not Me, It's You" 6/10 Lily Allen is reasonably cute and sings quality pop songs but is also slightly terrifying due to how bitter and vindictive she comes off in songs such as "Smile" and in her blog posts. That being said, Allen seems...
