Greek Physique

By Stephanie Kohl | March 8, 2006

Shouts rang out and cheers echoed throughout the Holmes Student Center's Carl Sandburg Auditorium's walls Wednesday night at the annual Greek Physique competition.

This year's show brought together the buffest men and women from fraternities and sororities on campus.

"They all look amazing," said senior child development major Marcy Cavazos.

The competition began with individual performances from a new bantum weight division for men 145 lbs and under, followed by individual performances from the short women's segment.

Next the middleweight men competed, followed by tall women.

Finally, the heavyweights made their individual performances.

Chris Klein of the heavyweights and Andrea Trent of the short women won the titles of 2003 Greek Physique champion.

"I can't explain how I feel, it's amazing," said Klein.

According to judges, the competition was extremely close.

"Overall, how ripped and muscular they were the deciding factors for me," said judge Dick Zen Zen.

Though not everyone walked away a winner, both competitors and the audience showed much enthusiasm.

All categories proved extreme crowd pleasers.

At times, the show's emcees, 2001 Greek Physique Champion Matt Minuth and Matt Jolgren, had difficulty speaking over the audience's whoops and screams.

"It gets better every year because a lot more people are competing now than before, and they seem to have more confidence," said Ashrat Naguib, senior textiles, apparel and merchandising major.

The proceedings of this year's event flowed easily compared to previous years, Jolgren said.

"Since we broke up the categories into smaller groups, it just ran a lot better," Jolgren said.

Finalists showcased their muscules to the judges with various poses and stances.

"It's a lot tougher this year; the competition is better," said senior physical education major Banj Nguyen.

The organizers and co-host were pleased with the show, but not totally happy with some aspects.

"Overall, the judging was pretty decent, but I wasn't very happy with a couple decisions," said Minuth.

In the end, competitors were just happy to participate.

"I'm just here to have fun," Trent said.
