Trio axes arena show due to low ticket sales

By Deanna Cabinian | October 31, 2003

Because of poor ticket sales, the Paul Colman Trio show scheduled for Thursday at the Convocation Center has been canceled.

Kevin Selover, marketing manager for the Convocation Center, said ticket sales for the event were struggling.

“The promoter of the show thought it was in his and our best interests to pull the show,” he said.

Selover said he could not disclose the number of tickets sold.

The decision to cancel the show was made Tuesday, he said, but was made official on Wednesday.

“The show is not going to be rescheduled,” Selover said. “If we felt that the show would be successful, we would’ve pushed ahead with it.”

The Paul Colman Trio was supposed to perform at the arena with guests The Elms and Sarah Kelly.

According to the Paul Colman Trio’s Web site, the band received a Grammy nomination for Best Pop/Contemporary Gospel Album in 2003 for its album “New Map of the World.” The group also won the 2003 Dove Award for New Artist of the Year.

Selover said everyone who bought a ticket for the show can get a full refund at the original point of purchase.

Night Light Promotions was the promoter of the event.

NIU actors prep for showcase

By Laurel Marselle | October 30, 2003

NIU acting students have begun planning for their annual “Scene Night Showcase” in an effort to break into the acting scene.

A total of 24 acting majors graduating in the spring will invite agents from Chicago, New York and Los Angeles to view their talent and hope for a job, said senior acting major Colleen Miller.

Students plan this event throughout the school year in order to raise the sufficient funds. An entire class is dedicated to this project alone.

“This is basically our job fair, so we fundraise and pay for it all ourselves,” Miller said. “We start planning early because we rent theater space in Chicago for an evening, which needs to be reserved right away.”

At least $1,000 is raised every year in order to rent the space and bring agents into town.

“We send letters to fraternities and sororities to try and get them to donate money to our showcase,” Miller said. “We are also doing a Halloween show this weekend to try and raise money.”

Students agree that this showcase is extremely important.

“This is one of the most important times in the entire acting program because breaking into acting can be really difficult,” Clasen said. “This way, we get to know these people and get a push out the door.”

The showcase will be held Tuesday, April 27.
