All four wards open heading into April 17 Sycamore alderman election

By Jessica Fink | April 6, 2007

SYCAMORE | Kites of all shapes and sizes will decorate Sycamore's skies this weekend.

Kar-Fre Flowers, 1126 E. State St., will host its third annual Kites Over Sycamore festival from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Sycamore Park, 940 E. State St. Michelle Schulz, Kar-Fre Flowers manager, said the event always takes place the Saturday of Easter weekend.

"Last year, we had kite enthusiasts from all over come fly their kites," Schulz said. "It's the most amazing thing to see all those kites up in the air. Some you can't even believe are really kites because they're so funky. Last year's crowd favorite was a big blue tube kite."

The event will feature kite-making workshops in the Kar-Fre Flowers conservatory, a public kite fly at noon, flower specials and free popcorn and cotton candy. Festival attendees have the option to bring their own kites or make one of the two being offered by Kar-Fre.

"The bumblebee kite is free of charge and made using thread, a hole puncher and computer paper with a design on it," Schulz said. "The sled kite kit has a nominal charge of $5 and is made of Tyvek, a weather-proof material. It's a little more intricate."

Weather is a tricky factor with any outdoor event.

"Basically, kite flyers like to see winds anywhere from 10 to 20 miles per hour," said NIU staff meteorologist Gilbert Sebenste. "Anything stronger than that can rip it, but it really just depends on the actual size of the kite."

Schulz said Saturday's event will take place regardless of the weather.

"Of course there's always a gamble with the weather," Schulz said. "What we've come to find is that kids are pretty resilient. They don't care what the weather is like. I really think it's a matter of the Charlie Brown Syndrome and man-versus-kite."

The festival is open to all ages and expected to attract anywhere from 100 to 200 people.

"My favorite is the old-timers," Schulz said. "Many of them bring their lawn chairs and just sit back and enjoy the festivities going on around them. They remember their own kite making days and flying them in the park."
