Prior commitment forces Sycamore candidate Wilson out

SYCAMORE | There is one less candidate in Sycamore’s consolidated elections.

Former 3rd Ward candidate Willie Murphy, 2120 Highland Drive, confirmed his withdrawal Monday. Joyce Smith and Greg Taylor will continue to run for the 3rd Ward seat.

“Certain circumstances may have hampered me in the duties of alderman,” Murphy said. “There was no outside influence in my decision. It was more a matter of conflict of schedules.”

Murphy didn’t go into detail about his situation, but said he had other responsibilities to look after.

“I guess I just didn’t think it all through before I filed for candidacy,” Murphy said. “I had another commitment I just had to keep. There was just no way to get around it.”

Murphy said he supports both remaining candidates.

“Both are worthy and qualified,” he said. “I’ve talked with them, and they both seem to know what it’s all about. People should look at the issues, talk to the candidates and vote accordingly.”

Murphy’s name will remain on the April 17 ballot.

“The important thing is to vote,” Murphy said. “Being able to vote is a privilege.”
