Bar hours extended

By Stephanie Gandsey | November 25, 2003

his Saturday, waking up early will be an incentive for anyone wishing to celebrate Homecoming at the bars.

The DeKalb City Council voted to allow the bars to open at 5 a.m. Saturday, an hour earlier than the normal 6 a.m. opening.

Bar owners asked for the bars to open at 4 a.m., but the council felt the extra hour was sufficient.

“I don’t care if it’s one additional hour out of the year,” DeKalb Police Chief Bill Feithen said. “There’s been various chipping away at hours for establishments; where do we stop?”

Feithen said he approved of the extra hour because he has seen how smoothly the day is run and has had nothing but positive reports.

Council members also talked about spending $9,500 to update the police department, but some members questioned if it was wise to spend it at this point.

Members thought if the council was looking to build on the north side of the tracks, that the money shouldn’t be spent.

“If you guys are sure you’re not going to build it on this side, don’t spend the $9,500,” Mayor Greg Sparrow said.

The issue was tabled for discussion at a future meeting.

The council then approved a recommendation to upgrade lighting along West Lincoln Highway.

The project will cost $7,482 and will be done by Virgil Cook & Sons Inc.

Council members discussed the budget and said the city was $36,334 in the positive.

The city was able to have a surplus by eliminating three full-time positions and refunds from bonds.

Some controversy occurred when the council approved a resolution that allows Sparrow to sign an agreement with the Board of Education for DeKalb Community Unit School District No. 428 for distribution of increased tax revenues from the Tax Increment Financing (TIF) districts. The city uses TIF to capture property taxes for revenue.
