Police investigate fake ID situation

By Nick Swedberg | August 26, 2002

The search continues for Arturo P. Hernandez, who is wanted for making and possessing fake identification cards.

The DeKalb Police Department issued a warrant for Hernandez’s arrest after searching his former residence at 122 1/2 Harrison St.

DeKalb police described Hernandez as a 5-foot-3-inch Hispanic man weighing 165 pounds. He drives a 1994 green-and-silver Dodge Ram with an Illinois registration number of 608YX.

According to reports, the search revealed that Hernandez produced and distributed fake Social Security and resident alien cards. Among other things, police found blank cards, a typewriter and laminating materials.

A search of Hernandez’s residence revealed more than 100 of each type of ID card, Kayes said. Kayes did not know how many had been distributed before their discovery.

Depending on quality, the price for the IDs ranged from $50-$100. According to Kayes, even the $100 fakes were of poor quality.

"They were pretty cheesy," Kayes said. "You could tell by the naked eye that they were fake."

Despite the low quality of the ID cards, Kayes said, "A lot of green cards and Social Security cards have been discovered." However, none of these incidents were connected with Hernandez.

Recently, the Illinois Liquor Control Commission introduced Project 21 in response to an ILCC survey about the drinking habits of underage college students.

Seminars were conducted where DeKalb Mayor Greg Sparrow met with more than 50 liquor licensees. Topics discussed at the seminars included liquor laws, penalties for serving minors as well as ways to combat underage drinking.

Licensees also joined the Beverage Alcohol Sellers and Servers Education and Training, an organization that, among other things, teaches bar owners how to spot fake IDs.

Hernandez is charged with unlawful manufacture of fraudulent identification cards and unlawful possession of fraudulent ID cards. Both of these offenses carry a punishment of one to three years in jail and a $25,000 fine.

To report information about Hernandez’s location, call the DeKalb Police Department at 748-8400 or CrimeStoppers at 895-3272.
