Woman charged in crash

By Tyler Vincent | October 30, 2001

A two-car accident between Waterman and Hinckley on Saturday night left two Leland residents dead and a DeKalb woman held on charges of reckless homicide.

Ana Zeciroski, 25, of DeKalb was arrested and charged with reckless homicide, disobeying a stop sign and driving under the influence. Police say the accident occurred when Zeciroski's Mitsubishi Montero struck a 2000 Dodge Dakota West driven by William E. Parr.

Both Parr, 42, and Pamela Bane, 35, were killed in the accident. Parr died at the accident scene, and Bane died after being transferred to Kishwaukee Community Hospital.

Neither Parr nor Bane were wearing a seat belt, investigators found.

DeKalb County Sheriff Roger Scott said Zeciroski ran the stop sign at the Route 30 and Howison Road intersection. The intersection has a two-way stop sign for Howison but does not have one for Rt. 30.

Results of testing done on Zeciroski still are pending, Scott said, but it has been established that alcohol was involved.

Zeciroski also was transferred to Kishwaukee Community Hospital but since has been released to the custody of the DeKalb County Jail awaiting a bond hearing at 9 a.m. today.

Pumpkins on parade

By Talesha Herbert | October 29, 2001

Tina Cliffe, a Sycamore resident for 22 years, enjoyed decorated pumpkins and the parade at the Sycamore Pumpkin Festival for the last time this year with her 15-month old daughter.

"We're moving out-of-state so this is probably the last time we will be here," she said.

Cliffe was excited about this year's 40th- anniversary celebration, themed "40 Years of Pumpkin Magic."

The Marine Corps is one of many leagues invited every year to participate in the parade held during the festival.

"I'm more than happy to come out here and work with the community to show our strength," said Sgt. Brian McNichols, a member of the Marine Corps in Joliet.

McNichols, along with 15 other Marines, was dressed in uniform, "hoping to recruit younger Marines," he said.

The Elderly Care Services, located at 330 Grove Street in DeKalb, joined other organizations at the festival. Their programs work to help caregivers with the growing population of the elderly.

Area firefighters also came to the festival to enjoy the event, but for the most part to be present "in case of an emergency," Sycamore firefighter Lieutenant Tal Hickey said.
