Slurs arm NIU mine field

April 10, 1991

NIU is quickly joining the ranks of colleges getting drawn into the fracas about words and which ones are slurs. A tough spot to be in and an equally tough spot to stay out of. The Northern Star printed "nigger", "Jew" and "faggot" in its top story Wednesday....

PADS forgotten

April 10, 1991

As a volunteer at PADS (Public Aid to Deliver Shelter), the local homeless shelter here in DeKalb, I am surprised by the fact that so few members of the Forum for Marxist Humanist Thought, as well as members of other organizations on campus, volunteer...

It’s simple: if you don’t like, don’t do

By Beth Behland | April 10, 1991

Spring means a lot of different things to different people. To some it is the rejuvenation of dormant life and a signal that warm summer days are around the corner. To others, it means it's time to pull out that dusty Bible and start preaching their words...

Owls lose trees

April 10, 1991

This school never ceases to amuse me. It's nice to see that the Star is so concerned about the great horned owls in front of Faraday that you ran an article entitled "Curious students could endanger owls." That's fine and good, but did the Star think...

Need open mind

April 10, 1991

When Martin Luther King Jr. marched peacefully down city streets for civil rights, there was a lot of blind anger and blatant misunderstanding of his concept of freedom and equality for blacks. We seem to be experiencing a very similar problem here on...

Parking demons

April 10, 1991

I am writing in regard to an article which was printed last week in The Northern Star. Nice try, but we all know that the parking division, who you tried so hard to portray as humans, is staffed by blackhearted minions of Satan who roam this campus like...

Sculpture errors

April 10, 1991

Let's talk about the "Balance of Equality" sculpture which is going to be located in the King Memorial Commons. I'm not going to say that I don't like it, or that it will be incomprehensible to future students. People who use those arguments against the...

Missing reality

April 9, 1991

Well I guess I am a ‘narrow-minded individual' as I thought that the purpose of a government-run institution is to protect those discriminated against. But as Jason Inman has clearly pointed out to me, government-run institutions should reflect only...

Outdated sins

April 9, 1991

Mr. Inman's letter of April 8 left me somewhat confused. For the past three years, people like Mr. Inman have been speaking out against homosexuality because the Bible tells us in Leviticus that it is wrong. Well, in Leviticus 19:27, the Bible also tells...

Survey results not gospel

April 9, 1991

NIU administrators should be encouraged by a recent survey of students but also be wary that it might not reflect more than a knee-jerk response. A survey, commissioned by The Northern Star, gauged student attitudes at NIU and came up with some positive...

Fortunate NIU

April 9, 1991

The Star has run several letters by NIU economists personally attacking NIU Sociology Professor Kay Forest for the paper she presented at our February program on Misinformation in the Media.

Although neither of the critics heard Forest's address nor asked to read her scholarly critique of media coverage of the Gulf war, both writers felt free to publicize sarcastic, insulting comments based on the newspaper account.

As a community-campus network concerned about peace and justice, we feel Forest's paper shed a great deal of light on the phenomenon sweeping this country today.

Namely, this is the war fever masking as patriotism, coupled with a tragic lack of concern for the human victims and environmental disaster of the war which our president celebrates as a glorious victory.

The economists attacking Forest have every right to question her conclusions from the data she presented, but it is unfortunate that their response is totally lacking the scholarly discipline displayed in the paper they are criticizing.

We take this occasion to express publicly our profound respect for Forest's professional expertise and our deep gratitude for the many hours of research which went into her paper.

NIU is indeed fortunate to have the services of this dedicated, highly talented scholar.

Her leadership this year in our efforts to inform ourselves and the public on critical peace and justice issues have been outstanding!

Stiffed workers

April 8, 1991

I have been a student aide at Founders Memorial Library for two years and in that time raises were given periodically based on merit and the amount of time a worker had been at the library. This has meant that workers were rewarded for their service to...
