With the current emphasis on fitness and the implementation of healthy eating plans, many people have become salad bar enthusiasts. While there are many good things to be said about increasing one's consumption of fruits and vegetables, there are some...

Raises tensions

November 20, 1990

This letter concerns the article about Tanya Smith written by Lisa Ferro. I read the Star almost daily and find this article disturbing. It's nice to know the Student Association is working for the students, but do we need to know every little detail?...

Non-essential hiring delayed

By Greg Rivara | November 19, 1990

Delaying all non-essential hiring until January to form a cushion to guard against possible drops in state funding should not pose any major logjams in services, NIU officials believe. The delay, announced last week, stems from legislators worrying about...

Confused point

November 19, 1990

This letter is in regard to a column in the Nov. 8 Star titled "Is drinking needed for a ‘good time'?" I found the article to be a bit contradictory.

Greg Rivara wrote about how younger children are beginning to drink at earlier ages, yet the author, himself, seems to associate his ‘good times' with drinking beer.

The author speaks of his two friends and how their friendship "primarily has evolved from and revolves around drinking beer." Yet in the same column, he spoke of how it is not needed for a good time. I found the column most confusing, and thus ineffective.

NIU Soviet student discusses policies

November 19, 1990

When the Soviet President won this year's Nobel Peace Prize, he was hailed nearly everywhere except in his own land, where day-to-day domestic troubles far overshadow foreign policy triumphs. But despite widespread discontent in the Soviet Union, Gorbachev's...

Tuition debate is a waste

November 19, 1990

University officials are bickering, and the end result could mean more dollars paid by students. Currently, Illiniois universities have a guideline, seldom followed, to make students' tuition cost equal one-third the cost of education. This was the basis...

Real TV station

November 19, 1990

This letter is in regard to the Nov. 13 letter by Phillip Johnston, if that was his real name. We communication majors who work at TV-8 do not appreciate unfounded and unsubstantiated criticism by those who propose to be communication majors. Let us enlighten...

November 19, 1990

University officials deserve congratulations in their never-ending quest to beautify the campus. With the King Memorial Commons practically completed, the area looks damn nice. And NIU students should be appreciative of everyone's efforts on the project....

Voting is a right

November 19, 1990

I am writing this in response to Kristen Sohacki's letter printed Nov. 14. Whether or not a voter is uninformed or not, he still has the right to vote. I personally don't recall any of the candidates whom were up for election stating their position on...
