Be prepared for mishaps

February 22, 1990

The Board of Regents should not have put themselves in a questionable position with bidding for new turf on NIU's and Illinois State University's football fields. The lowest of four companies submitting bids lodged a formal complaint against the board...

Make an effort

February 22, 1990

I am writing in regards to the terrible job of ice removal done by DeKalb city as well as NIU after our large snow storm and subsequent freezing rain last Wednesday and Thursday.

On the Friday after the storm, I was walking down the steps towards the lower level of the Village Commons Mall when I hit a patch of ice and slipped down the stairs. Luckily, my only injury was a bruise to my lower back but it could have been much worse.

Although the area is DeKalb property, it is the responsibility of the Mall owners to keep the area clean and safe. The removal of the snow is the easy part. It is the ice that is the real problem and challenge. I am fortunate to be walking with two healthy legs. What about those less fortunate?

The sidewalks and stairs are walked on by many people every day and therefore must be cleaned and maintained ALWAYS--even after our worst snowfall and icy conditions!

The same thing goes for NIU. I slipped many times on the way to my classes and yet I saw not one NIU truck or employee laying down salt or sand. In some places it was just one sheet of ice and you couldn't get a good foot-hold.

Don't just assume the sun is going to come out and it will all melt away. It doesn't work that way. I pay enough for this school—I shouldn't have to worry about breaking my head on ice while walking to class.

Smug attitude

February 22, 1990

"NINTENDO TRUCK HIJACKED,""WOMAN CHARGED IN REAL LIFE ‘FATAL ATTRACTION' MURDER,""SAKHAROV'S BRAIN WILL BE STUDIED,""BOY LOSES LEG IN MINE FIRE." These were some of the headlines in the state, nation, and international sections in The Star on Feb. 9....

Residence issue

February 22, 1990

I would like to comment on the editorial apearing in The Northern Star Feb. 13, "VP Hunt Going Nowhere." If the intention of the editorial was to discuss the direction of the vice president search, then I missed the point. The editorial states "the biggest...

Policy should be rethought

February 22, 1990

After the admission confusion some students faced when more than 1,000 were unable to get into a women's basketball home game against DePaul without buying a ticket, something needs to be done to better the policy. Some students were upset because they...

Let others speak

February 22, 1990

In view of the debate between Sarah Weddington and Phyllis Schlafly last Wednesday night, I'm sure we will be reading a lot more about abortion in the pages of The Star. I would like to address a different issue which was highlighted again during this...

A decade of media made itself noticed

By Claudia Curry | February 22, 1990

If you had to label this past decade as an age of "something," what would you say? It's difficult to pinpoint a single word for describing such a long period of time, but what was the driving force which shaped our nation to become what it is today? The...

Group stymied

February 21, 1990

We would like to call to your attention the discriminatory actions of some members of the NIU community towards the pro-life movement on campus. We are particularly troubled by the action of the Holmes Student Center Director Judd Baker toward Students...

Right idea, but try again

February 21, 1990

It is good to see Student Association senators thinking about how to improve their election process, but the new party system proposal might not be the best way to go. Although former SA Sen. Michael Murvihill claims he gave the SA Internal Affairs Committee...

Any contribution would help

February 21, 1990

What's wrong with making a little money? The DeKalb City Council does not see anything wrong with it. That's why fines for underaged drinking were increased at last week's city council meeting. The increases will not take effect until March 12, but after...

Never mind cable; NIU has own rings

By Alex Pope | February 21, 1990

If you want to see a great fight, don't waste your money on HBO—go to the bars! The DeKalb bars have three attractants, in addition to the obvious alchohol and music incentives: the drunks, the bad dancers, and the fights. (Luckily, most of us fall...

Confusing issue

February 21, 1990

After more than 30 years of reflective observation, I am confused about what philosophical base might be guiding decisions regarding Intercollegiate Athletics at NIU. The IIAC seemed to be a balanced conference and included Eastern Illinois and Michigan....
