Spiritually bare

Many of us are aware of the evils of racism and homophobia and are becoming aware of, through the animal rights movement, the evils of speciesism (the belief that the human species is superior to other animal species). Prejudice, in whatever form, only...

Unfair opinion

May 1, 1990

I am writing in response to Claudia Curry's editorial about the Christian Science family whose child died because their religious beliefs did not allow medical treatment.

Ms. Curry judged this family's religious beliefs to be wrong. I would like to remind her that the United States was founded in part upon the notion of religious freedom. As a journalist, Ms. Curry should respect the beliefs of these people.

This family chose to believe that God could heal their child, thus they refused medical treatment. Assumably, they had enough money to pay for treatment if they had so chosen.

I have one question: For all of the people who are too poor to afford medical treatment for their illnesses, do we charge them with manslaughter as well since our society often refuses to give them the opportunity for help?

Student Association Mass Transit Board members found a way to help themselves. The SA passed a proposal for a transit board vice chairman position to handle some of the adviser's responsibilities in more depth. One of these responsibilities is to try...

Words of wisdom: ‘Party on dudes…’

By Gina Quilici | May 1, 1990

Well, this is it folks. I'm finally leaving for good, to return to DeKalb no more. Graduation is upon me, and I've packed my bags to venture out into the horrible void of life known as none other than the "real world." I must admit that for some reason,...

Not sex objects

We, the Women's Alliance, would like to respond to your editorial entitled "Look for a Different Route." Prior to your article was a cartoon portraying our members as cockroaches being exterminated by "Freedom of the Press" bugspray. Does the cartoonist...

New luggage trend-bombs

May 1, 1990

It was just a slight oversight. Really, it was. Perhaps a particular news item in Monday's Chicago Tribune will eventually end up under the heading of "Just Another Crazy Thing That Happened Up In Wisconsin," but the public should take notice. It concerned...

Support ended

May 1, 1990

I am writing to inform Dr. LaTourette and all other interested parties why I, and by report, a number of other long-term Huskie boosters, are not contributing to the annual athletic fund raiser this year. The answer, very simply, is that we are quite...

Think of future

May 1, 1990

The reasoning used by John McManus, the John Birch Society public relations director, is both appalling and dangerous to our environment. In the April 20 issue of The Northern Star he is quoted as saying, "All the environmental issues ... are in the theory...

Pets, bicycles, passports spring into season

April 30, 1990

About this time of year mild southern breezes seem to set everything and everyone in motion. Modes of transportation, bicycles, motorcycles, skateboards, etc., proliferate. Pets and toddlers you never knew your neighbors had promenade up and down the...

Issue: tell students soon

April 30, 1990

Getting people to agree in their attitudes about something is usually the hardest part, but at NIU it seems to be the easiest step in a much bigger mess. You would have had to be living under a rock to not know that the ROTC program has been on thin ice...

Silver lining keeps mirror from cracks

By Dan O’Shea | April 30, 1990

Coming soon to a theater near you. Fear...has a new name...and a new face which actually looks very much like its old face but only slightly younger, thanks perhaps in part to a nose job here and eye tuck there and a little dab of Grecian formula. Anyway,...

Based on faith

April 30, 1990

Throughout the year I have read many articles and witnessed many events pertaining to the issue of abortion. In many of these instances the "pro-life" views were most strongly represented by individuals or groups of the Christian faith. Unfortunately,...
