Not his choice

October 6, 1989

Oh, those self-righteous young MEN who write impassioned letters to The Northern Star against abortion! No chance THEY will ever expereince an unwanted pregnancy. Since I doubt there's any chance of changing their minds on the issue, I'm just hoping two...

Ideas effective

October 6, 1989

Oct. 29, the men of Phi Sigma Kappa hosted a party for the brothers of the fraternity and their invited guests. The general consensus from those attending the party was that it was perhaps one of the most organized, most successful and most fun parties...

What’s it about?

October 6, 1989

Regarding your recent homecoming special issue, I found it to be quite informative, yet lacking in one particular aspect. I'm sure all the students on campus are familiar with the annual celebrations of homecoming; its parades, pep rallies and football...

The 11th annual Chili Shoot-out will be held Saturday at the Moose Club, 4301 North Main Street, Rockford. The public is invited and there is a $1 donation. Over 40 local chili cooks will brew their individual recipes which will be judged and sold. Brown...

Everyone must pay the price

October 6, 1989

It is time for the American public and the big whigs in the corporate world to start exercising some social responsibility and start paying for the conditions of our environment. For too long we have heard the blame put on the shoulders of the government....

Contact the city about poor living conditions

October 5, 1989

Speaking from the bar When you and your roommates sit down for breakfast, is it so cold in your apartment you can see each other's breath when you speak? When you go into the kitchen for an early a.m. snack, do you catch hordes of roaches picnicking on...

Doing their job

October 5, 1989

As a third year Resident Assistant, my reaction to Christine Rechner's letter "RAs too strict," is that Christine is very mis-informed as to what an RA's job responsibilities consist of. One of the RA's job responsibilities is to complete a series of...

Fault in media

October 5, 1989

As a Canadian I found Gina Quilici's column (Sept. 19) really well done. It sure is frustrating for us Canadians to find out that you do not even know basic political facts about our country. A few of weeks ago I was visiting my girl friend who attends...

Act of kindness

October 5, 1989

I would like to comment on a very rare occurence I experienced Sept. 28. I came onto campus to take a computer class, parking my scooter at the Swen Parson Hall bike racks and apparently leaving my keys in the ignition. I didn't notice I'd forgotten my...

Class, not test

October 3, 1989

Congratulations on your editorial titled "Test can't provide education," of Sept. 28. You are correct that a crammed-for test cannot provide a quality educational experience. The constitutional test was, in my opinion, imposed by the state legislation on high schools of this state, and it has no place in higher education.

As you point out, however, all citizens of our state need information about the workings of their government and how they can influence the policy process. I support fully your call to have POLS 100 made a part of the core curriculum requirements and urge all students to make it part of their general education while here at NIU.

Campus to be proud of?

October 3, 1989

How many times have you walked through the NIU campus, passing well-tended trees and carefully manicured grass and flowers, only to trip over fast-food cartons, soda cans and old newspapers? Granted, all of us have "more important" things to think about...

Channel efforts

October 3, 1989

In response to a letter to the editor written by TR Biddle (Sept. 8) concerning Columbia and the drug war, I must tell Mr. Biddle to wake up and smell the (Columbian) coffee. He states that "if it wasn't for those greedy Columbian drug farmers, this country...
