Our sincerest apologies

January 22, 1988

Yesterday's Northern Star editorial was accompanied by a cartoon in which a CHANCE student was depicted in what appears to be a "dunce cap." The artist's intention was to imply that over-generalized rules and restrictions treat CHANCE students like "dunces"...

Extends challenge to examine issues

January 22, 1988

In a letter to The Northern Star on Dec. 9, Steve Brown stated that I had "cleverly avoided" discussing the "morality" of love in the context of homosexuality. He also imagined that I had "attacked society." Both misunderstandings could not be further...

Calls for boycott

January 22, 1988

It's come to my attention that Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity promoted itself as a pious organization by sponsoring a Christmas party for underprivileged children. While this is a commendable project, I see a conflict with the fact that this same organization...

Face AIDS reality

January 22, 1988

When will the president wake up to reality? If he did not continue to purchase unneeded nuclear weapons systems, enough money would be freed to find cures for AIDS and most cancers, probably feed and shelter the homeless and still go a long way toward...

WKDI needs UPI

January 22, 1988

WKDI should have the UPI newswire. No reasonable alternative methods exist for getting national news 24 hours a day. I do not regularly listen to the radio, but when I do, timely events on the news broadcast are interesting and relevant enough to keep the radio on.

Because of the limited area that WKDI has access to (cable), it does not obtain the revenues of comparable on-the-air type stations. The Student Association should therefore fund the $5,000 necessary for the newswire and even consider a $10,000 start-up cost for WKDI to go on the air. This event, in the long run, would move WKDI from a large expenditure to a large cash generator. Advertising revenues will increase and this in turn will reduce the annual $30,000 shell-out of student fees to operate the station.

elping WKDI keep the UPI and go on the air can only result in positive benefits.

Take stand at VCB

January 21, 1988

Last semester, while I was in Village Commons Bookstore, my backpack was taken from the bins students are required to put their books into before entering the store. My backpack contained a research paper, notes that were imperative for three of my finals,...

WKDI wire service

January 21, 1988

Does Todd Lipscomb really think providing an alternate news source to students is "suckering" them? WKDI has given its listeners the opportunity to hear their favorite music while being kept up-to-date on NIU events and current world events. Granted,...

Inaccurate quotes

January 20, 1988

I continue to be impressed by (The Northern Star's) current and recent policy of conscientiously covering Board of Regents meetings so that you may adequately and accurately inform NIU students, faculty and staff and other interested readers about policy...

Racism conference one piece of puzzle

January 20, 1988

The fact that a meeting of college administrators will take place at NIU in February is a sure indication the racial problems that have plagued the university in recent years are far from being solved. And the fact that five administrators and student...

Poor evaluations

January 20, 1988

Teacher evaluations are supposed to reflect how well a teacher performs in the eyes of the students. The format of teacher evaluations, and the ways they are administered, make them a poor way of measuring a teacher's professional skill. Evaluations often...

Latin vs. Greek

January 20, 1988

In the Dec. 11 issue of the Star, you printed a letter from the John Lennon Society decrying a fraternity for using an X-rated movie to raise finds. The JLS says "in fact, the word pornography is from the roots ‘pornos gratis' or ‘depiction of sexual...

Invalid argument

January 20, 1988

I would like to respond to the ridiculous letter to the editor by Dan Taylor that appeared in the Dec. 3 issue of the Northern Star. His unmasked hostility toward women and society does nothing to support his argument that women don't understand how difficult...
