NIU priorities have to be made known

November 10, 1987

Now that the dust has settled and the NIU administration has an idea of where it stands financially, it is time to take stock in the situation and determine priorities for the future. Due to the budget cuts NIU, at best, will be operating at budget levels...

November 10, 1987

Forensics Director Jack Parker will try to develop the theme that "the law is communication" to let students to know "the practice of law involves communication." Parker, also the American Society of Trial Consultants secretary treasurer, said he will...

Ed. a necessity

November 10, 1987

Education is a necessity, not a privilege. Access to private schools is a privilege. Access to low-tuition schools is necessary for students from lower- and middle-income families to develop themselves personally and professionally. Upon graduation, students...

Roy wants better results next year

By Tom Clegg | November 10, 1987

There is only one thing to do whan your team goes 6-10-2. Think about next year.

That was what NIU soccer coach Willy Roy did as he pondered his first full year at the helm of a College team.

"I'm the eternal optimist," Roy said. "It's still the peristency factor I have. We've started something over here. It can only get better."

A major reason for Roy's high expectations is that most of this year's squad will be around next fall and the Huskies appeared to gel in their last four matches of 1987.

"At the end of the year we deserved to wear out uniform," Roy said. The first year coach said he was pleased with the Huskies' improved passing which led to back-to-back season-ending wins over Bradely and Northwestern.

Following last Wednesday's finale with NU, Roy gathered his players in the locker room for some parting comments.

"I've had an awful lot of fun," he told his team. "Basically - basically - you are a bunch of decent guys. If you were old enough I'd take you out for a victory celebration."

Most of 1987 was no party for the Huskies. After capitalizing on their early two-game home stand with a pair of victories, the Huskies suffered three straight losses away from DeKalb.

In their next six road matches, NIU managed just one tie while dropping five. The Huskies highest scoring output in their nine road games came in a 3-2 loss at Drake.

The need for a goal-scorer quickly became the predominant theme of Roy's post-game discussions. The former Chicago Sting leader was not used to seeing his teams squander scoring opportunities. For the bulk of 1987, any Huskie goal became grounds for celebration.

Case in point: In its 13 matches from Sept. 13 to through Oct. 25 NIU scored 18 goals. That does not sound like the statistics of a team in a scoring slump, but considering 10 of those tallies were at the expense of the lowly Chicago State Cougars one afternoon in DeKalb, it's apparent that much of the Huskies' season was spent in fulility.

Sophmore foward Preben Halle had been looked to as the Huskies offensive leader going into the season, but the soft spoken Norwegian wound up excelling as a defender in NIU's last several games.

"Preben moved to defensive line and really helped," Roy said. "He really moves the ball upfield well. The worst thing is to have guys kick the ball out of bound and say, ‘Good.'"

The only Huskie to emerge as a consistent scoring threat was freshman Willy Roy Jr. The son of the Huskies first-year coach put his name on the scoring sheet in nine of NIU's 18 matches. Roy Jr. wound up leading the Huskies with 20 points on 6 goals and 8 assists.

But coach Roy said his son has room to improve.

"Willy Roy has to work on his heading," he NIU father-coach said. "He's 6-foot-3. He should get more header goals."

The NIU coach is looking foward to the expected arrival of his twin sons Markus ad Karsten Roy. The Fenton High School seniors were recently named to the Tribune All-State team.

Both Markus (goalkeeper) and Karsten (defender) could have an immediate impact on the NIU soccer fortunes. Karsten would have an excellent chance to crack the Huskies starting lineup with the departure of senior Helge Abrahamsen, a potential assistant coach for next year.

Liberal vs. radical

November 10, 1987

During the past few weeks, I have been hearing more and more about the "liberals" on campus. The information covered has generally pertained to the John Lennon Society, who or what the JLS is protesting at the time, and or how radical the "liberal" ideology...

Past mistakes return to haunt ‘perfect society’

November 10, 1987

Before we begin with today's topic, let me just try a little experiment: aise your hands if you, students, professors, employees, locals, etc., have ever smoked marijuana (pot, cannabis, weed, ganja, herb, grass, dope, etc.). Whoa! That's what I thought....

Reagan must make moderate selection

November 9, 1987

As Douglas Ginsburg announced Saturday he was no longer interested in replacing Justice Lewis Powell on the Supreme Court, one had to wonder if President Reagan will ever be able to come up with an acceptable nominee. Last week, Ginsburg admitted to smoking...

Attack problems

This is in response to Gretchyn Lenger's column about the racist magazine Thunderbolt. I also feel that material such as Thunderbolt should be kept on the shelves of the NIU library. NIU is an institution of higher education. It offers many different...

Heard in bad way

November 9, 1987

Let's understand the issues Dan Moran brought to light in his "potty mouth" column. As I recall, Larry Jackowiak never opposed the Day of Action or the notion of protest—he supported it. What he is protesting is the way in which society is heard. Martin...

U.S. trade deficit

Tough times should call for even tougher decisions. The nation's trade deficit swelled to a record $39.5 billion in the April-June Quarter as a rising tide of imports overtook a smaller increase in exports. Despite the decline over the past year of the...
