By Mark Pickrel | October 6, 2003

Injuries have claimed another Huskie. One week after NIU lost two defensive starters against Iowa State, the offense took a hit. Junior wide receiver Dan Sheldon will miss the remainder of the season with a dislocated left elbow, coach Joe Novak said...

NIU has its own streak to end

By Ian Waddick | October 6, 2003

Ninety-five years. Sunday, the Cubs won their first post-season series in 95 years. Let me say it again: 95 YEARS. I know, it’s crazy. Anyway, think about just how long 95 years really is. The last time the Cubs won a post-season series, Theodore Roosevelt...

By Adam Zolmierski | October 6, 2003

Having 15 credit hours of class and 20 hours of practice each week isn’t easy. The underclassmen football players take on an even bigger class load - learning the playbook. I Sophomore wide receiver Sam Hurd remembers how difficult it was to get a grasp...

NIU survives Ohio scare

By Mark Pickrel | October 5, 2003

It wasn’t the smash-mouthed football game the crowd of 21,736 expected. At least on one side of the ball. Ohio rushed for 244 yards, while NIU coach Joe Novak abandoned the run after half time. The move paid off for the Huskies, as quarterback Josh...

Using all options necessary to win

By Mark Pickrel | October 2, 2003

A 1-3 team that’s a 22-point underdog on the road has made for quite a week of preparation for NIU football coach Joe Novak. While fans see a one-win team, the coach sees an endless array of offensive misdirection and trickery that makes his head spin....

NIU junior linebacker Kursten Strothman will get his first chance to start a game when the Huskies play Ohio at 6:35 p.m. Saturday at Huskie Stadium. The 6-foot-1 Rochelle native will step in for sophomore Javan Lee, who strained his right hamstring in...

Football facility in works

By Steve Brown | October 1, 2003

The north side of Huskie Stadium may receive a facelift as soon as next spring, said NIU associate athletics director Robert Collins.

Plans are underway for an athletic complex beyond the north stands that would include a weight room, training rooms and locker rooms on the lower level. On the top level would be offices and meeting rooms.

The facility also would include a student-athlete support center, where athletes could utilize computers and tutoring, Collins said.

“It’s been something we’ve talked about since I’ve gotten here,” football coach Joe Novak said. “It’s a commitment we have to make if we want the program to grow.”

Novak said current facilities get the job done, but a better football complex would greatly benefit the program.

“What we really need it for is recruiting,” Novak said. “When kids are going on recruiting trips, a football team’s facilities are part of what they’re looking at, since they’ll spend a great majority of their time at those facilities. I’ve got 110 kids right now, and only 95 lockers. We don’t have room.”

The complex, which Novak said will cost about $7 million, will be paid for by private funding.

“We’re working on that right now,” Collins said. “We’re soliciting donations as we speak.”

Novak said the recent success of the Huskies football team has helped, but donations have been received for some time. At the earliest, construction could begin this spring.

“We’ve raised a considerable amount, and we’re certainly close,” Novak said. “We just need a few more large donors.”

The complex would be the football team’s place to call home, Novak said. But it also would be used by other sports.

No plans are in place for what is to be done with the currently unoccupied north stands at Huskie Stadium.

“Right now, we don’t have a plan,” Collins said. “We’ve had two sellouts without having to open up a questionable stands area. We’ve discussed the issues sellouts have brought to us. It’s just not the best time.”

The stands, which have been vacant since 2001 according to NIU Sports Information, are unsafe for use, said Collins. Before 2001, the stands were used as general admission.

“With the [unstable] ground under those stands, we don’t want to risk having people jumping and cheering on them,” Collins said.

Collins denied the claim that the stands were unused only because of the fear students in the area would rush the field.

“We can deal with that,” he said. “All we’d need to put would be a controlled group in the area, like the band or honors students.”

Accepting the challenge

By Adam Zolmierski | October 1, 2003

NIU quarterback Josh Haldi has taken his share of hits from opposing linemen. But it doesn’t end there. I Haldi has been criticized by local media and the student body for being ineffective, despite being a big reason why the Huskies are off to their...

By Steve Brown | September 30, 2003

Among those in the stands for the NIU football team’s win over Maryland on Aug. 28 was one of NIU’s six current verbal commitments, Montell Clanton. Clanton, a running back from Rockford Guilford, said he liked what he saw enough to turn down scholarships...

Get off your lazy butts and walk

By Steve Brown | September 29, 2003

I’ll admit it. When I heard last week that I had to walk all the way to the Convocation Center to get my ticket for the Iowa State game, I was less than thrilled. That feeling seemed to be shared by many on campus. Just more than 5,100 of the 6,000...

Questioning sportsmanship

By Mike Morig | September 29, 2003

Sportsmanship, or a lack thereof, has become a growing problem here at NIU. The Huskies may be undefeated, but according to university administrators, fans at the games have not been winners. Associate Athletics Director Robert Collins said the Huskie...

By Mark Pickrel | September 29, 2003

Going into last Saturday’s game against Iowa State, the NIU football team had been basically injury-free. Not any more. Weak side linebacker Javan Lee and defensive end Travis Moore will miss at least next week’s game against Ohio, NIU coach Joe Novak...
