DeKALB – In recognition of his dedication on the field, in the classroom and in his community, senior defensive tackle James Ester has been named a semifinalist for the 2022 William V. Campbell Trophy, NIU announced on Wednesday. Annually, this award is issued to the most outstanding scholar-athlete in football, encompassing all divisions across the nation.
Since his arrival in 2019, Ester has emerged as a standout run-stopper on the NIU defensive front. He currently ranks second among all NIU defensive linemen in career tackles for loss and sacks, with totals of 16 and 5.5, respectively.
Regarding academic achievements, Ester completed his Bachelor of Science degree in communications during the previous spring semester and is presently working towards a Master’s in sport management.
In terms of community service, Ester has volunteered with Habitat for Humanity, Camp Power and Meals on Wheels.
“He’s an excellent student, a strong player and a great leader who understands what leadership takes both in the good times and through adversity,” said NIU’s head football coach Thomas Hammock via an NIU Athletic Press Release.
The National Football Foundation (NFF) will announce a selection of 12-14 award finalists on Oct. 25, with each finalist being awarded an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship. The NFF will delegate a winner on Dec. 5.
