As the bag opened, the smell of fries and salt hit my nostrils, filling them with an intoxicating aroma.
Slowly I put my hand back in, fishing out my sauce, delicately peeling back the bright yellow packaging.
With a swift motion, I dip a few fries in, making sure to coat them thoroughly and then chew them slowly making sure to savor every bit.
Immediately, I’m overwhelmed with the taste of ginger and soy.
These are just a few of the sensations I got when trying McDonald’s latest limited edition menu item, the Savory Chili WcDonald’s Sauce, released Feb. 26.
According to the McDonald’s website, the sauce pairs best with their McNuggets and french fries.
When eating the sauce, the flavor is very comparable to General Tso’s Sauce – often used on chicken – especially when paired with McDonald’s McNuggets.
When comparing the two sauces, they both have similar ingredients including soy, garlic, chili, sesame oil and vinegar.
According to the WcDonald’s website the campaign is based on the popular anime genre Isekai, in which the characters find themselves stuck in an alternate universe.
“A fixture across various anime and manga titles and genres, WcDonald’s has been an indelible part of anime culture for decades,” McDonald’s said. “Dip into another universe and immerse yourself in WcDonald’s, artistically realized to serve as homage to fans of anime and the Golden Arches alike.”
In addition to the sauce, McDonald’s is doing a number of other tie-ins. These include a weekly manga, a short anime clip as well as access to a secret room in Fortnite via a weekly secret code.
In order to access the manga and anime clips customers must scan a QR code on the to-go bags of any purchase. These bags are also decorated with manga stories, as well as a list of the WcDonald’s crew members, which appear to be anime-inspired with elements of McDonald’s characters and workers.
To access the weekly code for the secret Fortnite room, customers must purchase a 10- piece McNugget and have the McDonald’s app downloaded.
Overall the art and animation appear to be catchy and well drawn.
According to a McDonald’s Canada press release, the art was done by Acky Bright, a Japanese manga artist and illustrator.
“I loved being able to use my artwork to bring to life the dynamic, vibrant world of WcDonald’s for people around the world,” Bright said.
To create the animation, McDonald’s also partnered with Japanese animation studio Pierrot.
Guests will have until March 18 to get in on the anime-inspired shenanigans.
