Men’s squad wipes out DePaul

Neither cold, wind nor the scrappy DePaul crew could stop the NIU men’s tennis team Thursday at the west campus courts.

The Huskies (14-8) stomped DePaul 6-0 for NIU’s seventh in a row.

No. 4 player Dustin Dobrin evened his singles mark to 17-17 by beating Dominick Gentle 6-4, 6-7 (4-7), 6-4. Tied 4-4 in the third, Dobrin hit six winners in the last two games to close out the match. Dobrin pushed an aggressive backhand volley winner in the deep corner on match point.

“(Gentle) could have hooked me bad that last shot,” Dobrin said. “(The ball) hit the outside of the line.”

Dobrin was concerned about getting cheated by Gentle because in the second set Gentle questioned one of Dobrin’s calls. “The ball was way wide,” Dobrin said of the disputed call. “I don’t know why he even tried to argue it.” It was the third straight home meet in which Dobrin exchanged words with his opponent.

Mats Persson, playing No. 1 for the first time since March 1, beat Blong Ly 6-1, 6-4; Erik Andersch cruised 6-1, 6-1; Steve Senter, playing a career high No. 3 spot, had to come back to win 3-6, 6-1, 6-1; Paul Gill overcame two match points to win 2-6, 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-4); and Dave Settlemeyer won 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 6-2.
