NIU women netters have mixed results

Just use the old good news/bad news expression to sum up the NIU women’s tennis team’s effort at the Intercollegiate Tennis Coaches Association/Rolex Midwest Women’s Indoor Regional Championship Friday.

The good news was the Huskies got a pleasant surprise when the tourney needed two additional players to complete the singles field. From a wild card draw, NIU doubles qualifier Jamie Cheek was added to the singles field.

And Cheek made the most of the opportunity by reaching the second round of the invitation-only tourney with a 6-4, 6-2 upset of the University of Michigan’s Carrera Meleen. Unfortunately, the news in the next round wasn’t as good when Northwestern’s Joan Anthony eliminated Cheek with a 6-1, 6-1 defeat.

NIU singles qualifier Sarah Murfey also found the going tough as she lost a hard-fought 7-5, 6-4 match to Ohio State University’s Wendy Siever. In doubles, Cheek and teammate Hild Andersch were 7-5, 6-2 victims.

“It’s the first year we had anyone reach the second round, so that’s really good. I was really pleased with the way Jamie played. She had a tough fall, but this is a great finish to this part of the season,” NIU coach Patty Groth said.
