Friday’s Tugs matches consisted of Phi Kappa Theta vs Sigma Alpha Epsilon in the first match, and Alpha Sigma Phi vs Phi Kappa Sigma in the second.
The first match saw a split in the first two ropes with Phi Kaps winning the first, and SAE winning the second.
Phi Kaps took the third rope, and will be advancing to compete in the loser-bracket championship on Saturday.
ASIG vs Skulls was more of a blowout, with ASIG winning the first two ropes quickly, both ending with Skulls stepping on the rope.
“We practiced more, we conditioned more, we had more experience coming into it,” said senior sport management major and ASIG tugger Jake Benson. “We really just trusted ourselves and our callers.”
ASIG was able to maintain steady control the whole match, and had the Skulls anchor struggling toward the end of the second round.
The Skulls tuggers weren’t working as cohesively as in previous rounds, contributing to ASIG’s momentum.
“It was very not in sync, and so it became a timing issue, and then we lost control because of that,” said junior marketing major and Skulls tugger Andy Ayala.
