Sigma Alpha Epsilon (SAE) claimed fifth place and Alpha Sigma Phi (ASig) finished in seventh to kick off Tugs Championship day on Saturday.
Tug’s final day saw SAE take on Phi Kappa Sigma (Skulls) in the seventh-place match before A Sig battled Phi Kappa Theta (Phi Kaps) for fifth place.
SAE dominated Skulls in their matchup that lasted a few minutes. Both ropes ended with Skulls’ caller stepping on the rope for the SAE win.
“Our first two matches weren’t that good and we were overpowered,” said David Rivera, a mechanical engineering major and SAE tugger. “But, we had a lot of things we had to work on during the week, so we just implemented that in our last match and won.”
Rivera also praised Skulls’ return to Tugs.
“I give full props to the Skulls for going out there and tugging for their first year back. It was good for them, and I know they’re gonna be good for the next few years,” Rivera said.
In the fight for fifth place, A Sig and Phi Kaps were evenly matched. The first rope lasted all 20 minutes with ASig holding the rope advantage before PKT drew level in the second rope by advantage in just under 20 minutes.
Phi Kaps came out swinging in the final rope but ASig adapted and flipped momentum to secure the win in about 15 minutes via Phi Kap’s caller stepping on the rope.
ASig placed 5th followed by Phi Kaps in sixth, then SAE in seventh and finally Skulls in eighth.
