Jim Rose, sports anchorman for the WLS nightly news broadcast, will speak at NIU Thursday at 8:00 p.m. in the S.E. meeting room of Neptune Hall.

Rose joined WLS-TV in April 1982 and anchors the sports on the Eyewitness News Monday through Friday at 4 p.m.

Previously, Rose was weekend sports anchor and play-by-play reporter for a Syracuse, N.Y. station. He also hosted and produced “Sportsweek Nine,” a weekly sports magazine program and “The Halftime Report.”

In 1981, Rose received Best Sports Story Award from the Syracuse Press Club for his “Sportsweek Nine” segment on the Sugar Ray Leonard/Larry Bonds title boxing match.

He also won Best Reporting Under Deadline Pressure from the Syracuse Press Club for his story about the Carrier Dome roof raising, and again in 1979 for Best Sports Story covering the Empire State Games.

Rose earned a degree in mass communications from Rhode Island College in 1977. While attending college he was sports anchor for a station in Providence, R.I.

Neptune Resident Assistant Kurt Johnson, who organized the event, said it will be an open discussion. The topic of the presentation will be broadcast journalism.

Rose will also talk about his career and “life in general,” Johnson said. The presentation will last about an hour and a half, he said.

The event was sponsored by the Resident Assistant Association and various residence halls, Johnson said.
