Accident victim improves

The condition of an NIU student who was struck by a car Saturday night has improved from serious to fair, a spokesman for St. Anthony’s Medical Center, Rockford, said Wednesday.

Andrea Ford, 19, 907 Kimberly Drive, was transferred to St. Anthony’s from Kishwaukee Community Hospital after she was struck by a 1987 Mazda 626LX driven by NIU student Shawn Tate, 22, Chicago.

A DeKalb Police report said Tate’s vehicle was southbound on Normal Road as Ford and NIU student Denise Macon were crossing in a northeast diagonal direction. The report said Macon, who was in front of Ford, heard the impact and saw Ford fly through the air after being struck.

The report states Macon and Ford were not in the marked crosswalk, near Founder’s Memorial Library.

According to the report, Tate said he was not speeding and he did not see Ford prior to striking her. Tate said he was distracted by a conversation with a passenger, the report said.

Although the accident report indicated that Tate had been drinking prior to the accident, blood alcohol tests were not performed. DeKalb Police Lt. Charles Beierlotzer said Tate was not tested because state law requires police to show probable just cause at the scene to perform the test, and there was not enough indication at the scene to justify a test.
