McCabe’s fundraiser profitable, beneficial

An eight-hour dance-a-thon fundraiser Saturday was a success, raising between $1,200 and $2,000 for the Jennifer Ettema Scholarship Fund.

Ettema, a senior communications major, died of Marfan’s disease one week before this semester started. Her one goal in life was to graduate from college.

“It (the dance-a-thon) was great,” said Toni Mazzuca, a high school and college friend of Ettema. Mazzuca, who danced the whole eight hours Saturday, raised $250 herself.

The dance-a-thon was held at McCabe’s Lounge, 323 E. Lincoln Hwy. Mazzuca said about every chair in the bar was full by mid-afternoon. More than 20 dancers helped raise money through pledges for the scholarship fund, with about 15 people dancing the entire time. “Bottomless” cups of beer also raised $300.

The scholarship will be given to a communications major or minor who is active in communication organizations, is hard working, and shows some financial need.

Mazzuca said she hopes another fundraiser, possibly another dance-a-thon, will be held next semester, so the scholarship can be continued.
