Roy’s team splits

BUFFALO GROVE—The NIU soccer team hit the road over the weekend and was able to come home with a 2-1 win over Northwestern Sunday but suffered a tough 3-2 loss to Quincy College Friday.

Friday’s game against QC was a hard loss for the Huskies to take. At one time the Huskies were up 2-0 against their Big Central Soccer Conference foe, only to give up three unanswered goals.

Scoring first for NIU was John Lechner on an unassisted goal from left of center with 8:57 off the clock. Karsten Roy followed suit with about 15 minutes left in the half on a seven yarder with the assist credited to Willy Roy Jr.

At that point, the Huskie production line shut down. Sean Bowers put up the first point for QU on a penalty kick with 33:36 gone. In the second half, NIU became its own worst enemy by putting the ball into its own goal to tie the game at 2-2. QU put the game away with just under two minutes left with a goal credited to Dev Reeves and the assist by Al Anzer.

On Sunday, the Huskies made up for their loss by defeating the Northwestern Wildcats at the Schwaben Center in Buffalo Grove.

The ‘Cats drew first blood as Sean Carlin knocked one in from eight yards on the assist from Keith Martino with about seven minutes left in the half.

As the half ended, an irate coach Roy could be heard stating the facts to his team on the sideline hoping to light a fire in his Huskie team.

It took a while for the team to catch a spark, but at 72:15 the Roy brothers teamed up to tie the game. Karsten Roy scored the goal with Willy Roy Jr. giving the assist.

Roy Jr. put one of his own in with about 11 minutes left in the game on a direct free kick following a Wildcat foul. The assist and goal by Roy Jr. put him back on top of the Huskie statistics with five goals and six assists for a total of 16 points. John Lechner is one point back at 15.

With the win over Northwestern, the Huskies’ overall record now stands at 6-6-1. However, the loss to Quincy keeps NIU’s conference record winless at 0-5-0 with only one conference game left in the season.

The game against Northwestern can be seen Wednesday at 8 p.m. on SportsVision.
