Return into the cold for NIU netmen

After the NIU men’s tennis team’s recent spring break trip to warmer climates, the Huskies showed their love for higher temperatures by putting together a five-match winning streak.

Now Coach Carl Neufeld is hoping his crew can continue the hot style of play even though the next two matches are on much cooler courts against Big Ten foes: Michigan and Wisconsin.

NIU, 15-9 on the year and fresh from a 9-0 win over Missouri, faces the 9-2 Wolverines today in Ann Arbor, Mich., at 2:30 p.m. before taking on Wisconsin March 28 at 1 p.m. in Madison, Wis. The Badgers enter their spring break tour with a 4-4 record.

And when it comes to the hottest of the hot, the honor goes to NIU’s No. 1 singles entry, Steve Wiere, who has won 14 of his last 15 matches to sport a 22-7 record for the year in singles matches. His set percentage of .782 is better than his won-lost match percentage of .759.
