Men’s tennis picks up first MAC victory

DeKALB — Men’s tennis won its first Mid-American Conference matchup of the season with a dominant 6-1 victory over Binghamton University Thursday in Rockford.

First-year Mikko Malinen and sophomore Victor Spolidorio took the first doubles match, defeating juniors Kushaan Nath and Tiago Lourenco 6-1 to put NIU ahead early.

Seniors Eric Marbach and Erich Schuette secured the doubles point for the Huskies with another 6-1 victory over senior Inigo Saez and first-year Dylan Friedman.

First-year David Pata and junior Bor Schweiger Muzar were down 3-5 against Binghamton senior Ludovico Cestarollo and sophomore Alejandro Pena. Their match did not finish.

NIU went on to win five singles matches. All matches were decided in two sets. The only match loss for the Huskies went into three sets.

Marbach defeated Cestarollo in a strong performance, 6-2, 6-3. The victory marks his second consecutive singles win. Pata defeated Nath in a pair of sets, both going 6-2.

Lourenco tried to get the Bearcats going with a win over Muzar, 7-6, 4-6, 10-6. However, it would be the only point scored for his team.

Malinen claimed the Huskie win with his two sets against Pena, both going 7-6. Junior Shao-Yu Yu won his match over Saez, shutting him out in the first set 6-0 and defeating him in the second 6-4.

Spolidorio defeated junior Sebastian Quiros, shutting him out in the first set 6-0 and defeating him with a quick 6-1 second set.

With the win, NIU recovers to 9-9 on the season and earned its first conference win and climbed to 1-2 in MAC play.

The Huskies return to the court 1 p.m. Friday in Rockford to host Western Michigan, hoping to even the score after falling 0-7 to the Broncos March 16.
