Dec. 1 is National Pie Day and it just so happens to fall at the beginning of a prominent holiday month, giving us all a good reason to start celebrating early.

Pies have appealed to the average dessert lover’s sweet tooth for generations, no matter which way you slice it. It’s so true in fact, that this delectable confection claims two days on our calendar: Jan. 23 and Dec. 1.

Here’s a list of savory, piquant pies that will make your mouth water:

Apple

Also known as a symbol of America, apple pie can be found on every table during any season or holiday. It’s typically baked beneath a crisp layer of crisscrossed dough and served with a scoop of ice cream.

Pumpkin

Pumpkin Pie is a holiday trademark and a personal favorite of mine. Usually, it’s made from smaller “pie pumpkins” and it consists of one creamy layer atop a crust, garnished with a dollop of whipped cream.

Chicken Pot Pie

One can’t forget to mention the king of all comfort foods, chicken pot pie. They’re typically stuffed with meat, vegetables and gravy, and are a warm creamy remedy during the cold winter season.

Key Lime

Last, but not least, the tart, refreshing favorite of summer. Key lime pies are an American dessert with a succulent merengue topping and have a tangy flavor that tantalizes the tongue.
