The Atypical College Girl’s Guide to Staying committed to the Gym

By Maddie Barrett

You’ve been “working out” for months, but nothing seems to be working. You may not be seeing the results you want because you aren’t committed. Sometimes you skip, sometimes you find something better to do.. Have no fear; here’s some tips to keep you motivated and committed to getting your summer body.

Watch your favorite show during cardio

Watching Netflix while working out can keep you motivated; if you watch your favorite show while working out, you’re distracted from the devastation that is cardio. Watching a 30 minute episode while doing 30 minutes on the elliptical is great because you’re paying less attention to how sweaty or tired you are.

Set a schedule

Keeping the gym in your schedule is a foolproof way to hold yourself accountable. If you squeeze the gym in between your study date and your 6 p.m. class, you’re more likely to get it done. If you schedule the days you work on certain muscle groups as well, like legs on Thursdays, you’ll feel committed to the schedule.

Reward yourself

Rewarding yourself is a great way to stay motivated, whether the reward is going out with friends on Friday night or eating a bowl of ice cream. Having something to look forward to is just what you might need to keep yourself going to the gym on the nights you really don’t want to.

Whether you use these methods or not, staying committed to the gym is up to you entirely. If you don’t want to go to the gym, you won’t do it. You have to be stuck on the idea of going there to get it done. The only thing standing between you and the gym is your own mind, and your bed of course.
