Kristopher Ortega, redshirt freshman men’s tennis player, was named Mid-American Conference Singles Player of the Week Thursday, according to NIU Media Services.

Ortega won both his singles matches over the weekend to help the Huskies start 2-0 in conference. At the No., he beat Tiago Lourenco of Binghamton 4-6, 6-2, 6-1. He then topped Nemanja Guzina of Ball State 6-6, 6-3 to help the Huskies complete a weekend sweep.

The redshirt freshman improved his record to 18-9 on the year and 11-4 in double matches.

This is Ortega’s first Player of the Week award and the second Huskie player to achieve the award this season.

Ortega and the Huskies are on the road against Western Michigan University 1 p.m. Friday at the Sorensen Courts West Hills Athletic Club in Kalamazoo, Michigan..
