MAC cancels future meetings, championships in Indiana

MAC Commissioner Jon Steinbrecher said on Tuesday the conference won’t hold future meetings or championships in Indiana because of the state’s Religious Freedom Restoration Act.

The Religious Freedom Restoration Act, also known as SB 568, allows individuals and businesses to legally discriminate against members of the LGBT community based on religious beliefs.

“The Mid-American Conference will not schedule any more meetings or championships in Indiana until this current matter is brought to a sensible and appropriate conclusion,” Steinbrecher said, according to a Tuesday ESPN article.

The MAC holds its annual presidents meeting in Indianapolis in January or February, but the meeting won’t be held there unless changes are made, Steinbrecher said, according to ESPN.

Ball State is the only Indiana school of the MAC’s 12 members.
