NIU track and field: Huskies hold own at Michael Johnson Classic

Track and field placed nine competitors in the top 10 of several events Saturday at the Michael Johnson Classic in Waco, Texas.

The Huskies went up against Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, TCU, Tulsa and Fresno State, among others.

Highlighting the NIU performances was senior Latesha Bigby, who broke the school record in the 100-meter hurdles. Bigby finished in 13.61 seconds, breaking Roneisha Frye’s mark of 13.63 seconds, which stood since the 2012 MAC Championships. Bigby took fifth place in the event.

Sophomore Claudette Day and freshman Ashanti Hutton automatically qualified for the MAC Outdoor Championships in the high jump and 400-meter dash, respectively. Day leapt 1.72 meters in the high jump for fifth place. Hutton took 13th in the 400-meter dash with a time of 55.68 seconds.
