NIU men’s tennis: Huskies head to Indiana for two matches

By Patrick Smith

Men’s tennis will look to remain undefeated in conference play before playing its second-to-last non-conference game of the season.

The Huskies (14-4, 2-0 MAC) will be on the road against the Ball State Cardinals (9-9, 0-1 MAC) 1 p.m. Saturday in Muncie, Ind.

The Cardinals boast a 6-1 home record, and NIU head coach Patrick Fisher said this will be a tough matchup.

“Ball State was a team that was picked to finish ahead of us,” Fisher said. “It’s going to be a tough like every other game in the MAC. I know it sounds cliché, but that’s the truth because the league has so much parity.”

After the Huskies finish their conference game against Ball State they will have a non-conference game against the Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne Mastodons (8-9) 1 p.m. Sunday in Fort Wayne, Ind.

The Mastodons are coming off a win in their last match.

“They’re a good team, as well,” Fisher said. “A lot of their results this season are similar to us. They’re a tough team at home, and we’re expecting a 4-3 level type of match.”

Fisher said he hopes to learn a lot about his team this weekend but said it’s still hard to predict the potential of this squad.

“At this point we’re trying to [take] every game week by week,” Fisher said. “We’re not looking ahead, and we haven’t qualified for the MAC Tournament yet. Maybe after this week we will have a better idea of how good we’re as a team.”
