NIU women’s golf: Huskies settle for 14th place at Rio Verde Invitational

By Patrick Smith

Women’s golf was unable to find a surge throughout the Rio Verde Invitational in Rio Verde, Ariz., placing 14th out of 18 teams.

The Huskies finished the weekend tournament with a final score of 931. They finished 35 strokes behind Seton Hall, the winner of the tournament.

NIU finished behind seven teams in its conference in the tournament. Toledo led the MAC, finishing tied for second place and only four strokes behind Seton Hall.

With the exception of sophomore Lena Gautier, the Huskies couldn’t find their groove throughout the tournament. She finished in 13th place and posted a score of 225 (73, 80, 72). She finished seven strokes behind Seton Hall’s Alison Kruse and Erin McClure, who finished tied for first with a 218.

“I don’t think we played to the best of our capabilities,” said NIU head coach Kim Kester. “We saw some good and bad things out there and are looking forward to Cincinnati on Friday.

“We don’t know much about the course, but we saw some good stuff here and look forward to the rest of the season since it’s the midway point of the season. It’s crunch time. We’re trying to end the year on a high note so we can compete for a conference championship in the MAC Tournament.”
