NIU softball: Huskies open 2015 with 2-3 weekend

Softball quickly put the first day of the season in the rearview mirror as it closed a three-day tournament on a strong note.

The Huskies lost to the Pittsburgh Panthers, 3-2, and the Texas State Bobcats, 14-5, Friday at the Hampton Inn & Suites Invitational in San Marcos, Texas.

Saturday, the Huskies split a doubleheader, beating the Sam Houston State Bearkats, 8-7, and losing to Pittsburgh, 4-0.

They closed the trip with an 8-3 win over Texas State Sunday.

Sophomore first baseman Kayti Grable went 8-16 (.500) over the weekend with three home runs and nine RBIs.

Junior designated hitter Emily Naegele batted 8-17 (.471) with two homers and three RBIs.

Freshman catcher Alaynie Woollard collected four hits, three of which were round-trippers, and drove in five runs.

Senior pitcher Jessica Sturm went 2-1 with a 4.13 ERA. Keegan Hayes and Tara Thacker each took a loss in the circle.
