NIU softball: Huskies squeak out 2-3 weekend

By Northern Star staff

Softball posted its second-straight 2-3 weekend as four games were decided by one run each at the Trojan Invitational in Troy, Ala.

The Huskies (4-6) were swept by the Evansville Purple Aces, 9-1, and the Troy Trojans, 5-4 in eight innings, Friday. They turned the tables Saturday, sweeping the Kennesaw State Owls, 2-1, on a walk-off single, and Troy, 6-5, in comeback fashion. Sunday, they dropped an 8-7, eight-inning affair to the Connecticut Huskies.

The Huskies have been involved in a number of tight games this season. Six of 10 games have been decided by one run, and the Huskies are 3-3 in those games.

Freshman pitcher Keegan Hayes went 1-1, while senior Jessica Sturm went 1-2 in the circle. Saturday’s 6-5 win over Troy gave Hayes her first career win at NIU.

The Huskies return to action this weekend at the Skyhawk Classic in Martin, Tenn. They take on Indiana-Purdue Indianapolis 9 a.m. and Tennessee-Martin 2 p.m. Saturday. Sunday they take on Southeastern Louisiana in a doubleheader starting at 9 a.m.
